The winter months are usually a great time for your skin to take a break from any sun damage that may have been caused in the summer months. One of the things I recommend to my patients who have sun damage, including sun spots, is to be treated with the IPL laser or Sciton Laser. Uneven pigmentation, especially on your face, makes you look older. With the IPL or Sciton lasers, we can literally erase years of sun damage and leave your skin with a fresh, more youthful glow.
First, let’s talk about the IPL laser. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is a technology used to treat sun damage, thread veins and skin pigmentation problems. It can also be used to treat acne and rosacea. The reason why I suggest the winter months as an ideal time to be treated with IPL is that although the treatment is relatively painless (I apply a numbing cream to treatment areas), you will notice some skin darkening of sun spots for a week or two after the procedure before they lighten or shed. You can usually cover these with makeup so it’s not a big issue. I also recommend that you don’t do the IPL right before a sunny vacation because you really want to stay out of the sun for at least two weeks to give your skin time to heal.
Treatment with the IPL laser, sometimes referred to as a photo facial or fotofacial, takes about 30 minutes. Most benefits from an IPL treatment appear gradually in the weeks following the treatment. In addition to treating the face, IPL can be great to treat discolorations on the upper chest and décolletage area.
With Sciton you have a range of options. The Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser eliminates years of damage by precisely targeting the right depth of your skin. Halo restores the luminous glow you had when you were younger. There is flexibility in treatment levels and downtime that can be customized for your individual needs. It will improve the appearance of tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles, reduce pore size and increase reflectivity and glow. The winter months are also the best time to be treated with Halo by Sciton because you should steer clear of the sun for a few weeks after the treatment.
My other suggestion for the winter months – don’t forget to wear sunscreen every day! Even though the sun may not be as intense in the winter months it’s always a good idea to play it safe and keep your skin protected.
