Laser Skin Resurfacing

Fractional Skin Resurfacing

“Fractional non-ablative”  laser therapy, including Clear and Brilliant, Fraxel and ResurFX are truly effective in reducing wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks.

Clear and Brilliant, by the makers of Fraxel, was introduced as a versatile laser with significantly less downtime than the Fraxel Dual.  Delivering wavelengths 1440nm and 1927nm, Clear and Brilliant treats superficial pores and pigment, or deeper dermal thermal zones for stimulating production of collagen and elastin.  There is no social downtime, and patient satisfaction is high.  A series of treatments has yielded results similar to Fraxel Dual.

Fraxel Dual, delivering wavelengths 1927nm (like Clear and Brilliant) and the more aggressive non-ablative therapy with the 1550nm wavelength, is preferred for deeper wrinkles and scars, but requires social downtime of 3-7 days, depending on the individual patient’s response.

ResurFX  possesses the technology that allows true non-ablative skin resurfacing with wavelength 1565nm, as effective as Fraxel Restore 1550nm wavelength.  What sets ResurFX apart is the ability to cover the same surface in one pass of the laser handpiece, as compared with 8 passes for Fraxel.

Our practice has chosen the Clear and Brilliant for those who prefer less downtime, and the ResurFX  for full fractional laser therapy.

ResurFX® (Erbium 1565)

What does the ResurFX® do?

-Treats deeper lines and wrinkles
-Renews, softens and smooths skin texture
-Treats surgery scars, old and new
-Stretch marks
-Reduces the appearance of acne scars

How It Works

ResurFX® (Erbium 1565) laser skin resurfacing is relatively noninvasive compared to many other types of laser skin enhancement. The ResurFX® laser’s unique design allows us to treat microscopically small treatment zones surrounded by untreated areas for very rapid healing and dramatic results. Early signs of aging – such as wrinkles, discolorations, surgery scars, stretch marks and acne scars – can be corrected with ResurFX® laser skin resurfacing. As the treated area begins to heal, a layer of new skin appears, restoring a fresh, youthful complexion. The ResurFX® laser treatment also encourages collagen production, filling fine lines and wrinkles while creating a healthier, more vibrant appearance. Optimal results are achieved with four treatments about four weeks apart.

Clear and Brilliant

What does Clear and Brilliant do?

-Visibly illuminates skin tone
-Renews, softens and smooths skin texture
-Creates naturally radiant and glowing skin
-Improves tone and color
-Reduces the appearance of pores

How It Works

Clear + Brilliant laser system has been nicknamed the “baby fraxel” since it utilizes the same technology as traditional Fraxel.  Clear + Brilliant has two different hand pieces, the 1440nm and the 1927nm.  The 1440nm handpiece is used for reducing pore size, improving fine lines and overall texture.  The 1927nm handpiece is used for treating melasma, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.  If you compare it to the Fraxel Restore, it is less painful and has less downtime while still achieving results.

Approved by the FDA, the Clear + Brilliant Laser System is ideal for men and women who want to improve the look of their skin and get a head start on preventing the signs of aging from appearing. Your skin is refreshed from the inside out, replacing damaged skin with healthy, glowing skin. Clear + Brilliant can enhance all skin types and rejuvenate the deeper layers of skin.

What to Expect from Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing is safe for all skin types and causes only minor discomfort during treatment.  A topical anesthetic can be used to help minimize the discomfort, which is often described as a feeling of increased heat.  One session usually takes about 15-30 minutes, but procedure time will vary depending on the size of the area being treated.  To protect your eyes, a special shield will be placed over them. You can relax during your treatment as your specialist moves the laser over your face. This is a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime involved. Most of our patients benefit from 4 to 6 treatments, at 3-4-week intervals.

Results & Recovery

Immediately after your treatment it will feel like a mild sunburn but  will subside quickly.  You can return to your daily activities after your treatments.  Over the next few days your skin may feel like sand paper when you apply moisturizer but will not be noticeable to anyone but you.  It can take 7 to 14 days for the skin to return to normal.  New collagen synthesis takes about 8 weeks from the first treatment so best results are seen 8 weeks after your final treatment.

Protect your new skin by  avoiding aggressive exfoliation and by applying moisturizers and sun screen frequently. Avoid the use of retinoids and topical corticosteroids for 1 – 2 weeks before and after treatment. Avoid systemic steroids (e.g., prednisone, dexamethasone) throughout the course of the your treatments.  As you continue your treatments, your skin will look increasingly radiant and healthy. Sun-damaged areas and other areas of concern will be replaced by more even pigmentation, tone and texture, and skin that glows with health.
