Juvéderm

Juvederm Cheryl Karcher MD
Juvéderm® is an FDA approved dermal filler from Allergan, Inc. (the makers of Botox®). It is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler that is FDA-approved to last up to one year, and is considered by many to be the “next generation” filler offering a natural look and feel, as well as long-lasting results. Since it is so similar to your own tissue, there is no need for a sensitivity test.
Juvéderm XC is the first and only non-surgical hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA-approved to instantly smooth moderate to severe wrinkles around your nose and mouth for up to one year with optimal treatment.
The treatment helps to ‘fill out’ and smooth away lines or wrinkles, acne scars and enhance the lip size and shape. Results are immediate with minimal recovery time. Juvéderm is the most frequently chosen injectable filler for the lips because of its smooth, soft gel formula.
Juvéderm comes in 2 lidocaine-enhanced formulas to treat lips and fine lines or provide structural support for various corrections. Dr. Karcher will choose the perfect formula (or combination of formulas) that best fits your skin’s correction needs.

What areas will Juvéderm improve?
• Lip borders, vertical lip lines and wrinkles
• Corners of the mouth – drooping corners are uplifted
• Superficial forehead lines and crow’s feet
• Thinning lips (for increased volume – referred to as lip augmentation)
• Deep folds on the sides of the mouth – nasolabial folds
• Marionette lines

Juvéderm or Restylane?
Both Juvéderm and Restylane feature hyaluronic acid, a complex sugar organically present in all living cells. In particular, hyaluronic acid exists in the cells that are part of your skins’ complex matrix of connective tissues. It exists right alongside of collagen, which gives your face fullness, and elastin, which keeps your skin elastic, but hyaluronic acid has an even more important role – it maintains the water in your skin.
Regardless of which filler you use, when you add more hyaluronic acid to your skin, it attracts water, and it allows your skin to hold more moisture. This makes your skin look moisturized and fresh. In both products, the hyaluronic acid is completely biodegradable and proven to work with human cells. Because it is an all-natural ingredient, there is little to no risk of allergic reaction, and because the hyaluronic acid is synthesized from bacteria rather than taken from an animal source, it can be used by vegans.

Texture is where these two fillers really start to distinguish themselves from each other. Juvéderm is less likely to than Restylane to leave bumps during the application process. While this smoothness makes Juvéderm easier to use when trying to mitigate very small lines, Restalyne is the better choice for building up sunken or gaunt areas of your face. For instance, if used in the hollows under the eyes, Juvéderm is so smooth that it can travel to the top of the cheek, creating fullness where you don’t want it. In contrast, Restylane is more cohesive than smooth, and it is perfect for the areas under the eyes or other spots where you want a fuller effect.
The effects from both fillers last for several months, but Juvéderm has a slightly more complex formula that some find to be longer lasting, and a stronger version called Juvéderm Ultra Plus promises to last as long as nine to twelve months.
