Liposuction remains the gold standard for body contouring. It is ideal for patients who want to remove fat from certain areas that are out of proportion to the rest of the body.
A small incision is made near the area(s) of unwanted fat. Dr. Karcher inserts a liposuction cannula to dislodge and suction out the fat. Liposuction is a surgery, but general anesthesia is not necessary, depending upon the amount of fat being removed. Lidocaine is used locally to eliminate pain, a small bit of epinephrine is used to constrict the local blood vessels so there is no bleeding.
Common areas for treatment with liposuction include the abdomen, back, flanks, buttocks, chest, arms, thighs and neck. Liposuction is also commonly used after bariatric surgery or after weight loss.
